About Taughannock Falls State Park: Home to the tallest single-drop waterfall in the northeastern United States, Taughannock Falls plunges 215 feet—33 feet taller than Niagara Falls—into a gorge carved 400 feet deep through layers of sandstone, shale, and limestone. The name "Taughannock" comes from either the Algonquin word meaning "in the trees" or from a Lenape chief who, according to legend, died near the falls during a battle. The area was home to the Cayuga people before the American Revolution. In the 1800s, the gorge powered mills and a gun factory, and Victorian-era hotels brought tourists to view the spectacular falls. New York State began acquiring the land in 1925, and the park was developed by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. Today, the 750-acre park showcases the dramatic effects of glacial erosion that formed this "hanging valley."
