Nut and Fruit Tree Culture: NYNGA English Walnut Tour - Aug 2026

Carl Albers homestead planting, which also hosts a significant trial for the NY Nut Growers Association English Walnut Project, has grafted shagbark and shellbark hickories, apples, pears, plums, black locusts, and a vegetable garden. Carl is doing his best to foster early nut production through organic fertilization and other options for regenerative nut tree culture. You will learn about soil fertility, ways to improve soil drainage, and a regenerative approach to growing nut trees.

Carl Albers is the current Vice President of the NY Nut Growers Association and is providing leadership for the NYNGA English Walnut Project (EWP.) He has degrees in botany, and plant and soil science, and worked as a crop specialist for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County for thirty years. The main focus of the EWP is to collect and trial under NYS growing conditions a diverse mix of Juglans regia individuals, both existing cultivars and seedling trees, for local adaptation and nut quality. Our goal is to find the best EW individuals we can and make them available to the public for home and potential commercial use.
