14 Years Living Off-Grid in a Self-Built Cabin & Farming on Shared Land
By Exploring Alternatives
This video presents a long-running off-grid homesteading case built around shared land, reclaimed materials, and gradually evolving infrastructure. Stephanie and Joel have spent 14 years building a home from salvaged and reclaimed materials, including items taken from the dump, wood from a building they dismantled themselves, and other free materials they could obtain. The home started with no electricity at all, relying on candles, and later expanded into a more capable renewable-energy system with a solar panel and battery for lights. Over time, the system evolved into a practical mixed-energy setup that includes five solar panels, four lithium batteries, and a generator used as backup on cloudy days. The property also features a wood cookstove for heat and winter cooking, along with propane appliances for summer use and a thermostat-controlled propane stove to reduce nighttime stoking. Their food system is also substantial: they grow much of their own produce and keep fruits, vegetables, milk, meat, and honey, which makes the homestead an example of food production as a core part of self-sufficiency rather than an add-on. A sunroom has recently been added to improve natural light, provide passive solar heating, and support winter food-growing with LED grow lights. The practical significance of the video lies in showing how an off-grid life can be built incrementally over many years, with systems layered in as needs and resources change. It is useful for viewers interested in realistic homestead development because it reflects adaptation, redundancy, and a mix of low-tech and modern solutions rather than an idealized fully finished build.
